Frequently Asked Questions

Body Sugaring

What should I do to prep for my appointment?

  • For best results and the least amount of discomfort, we recommend three weeks growth since the last time you shaved or 4-6 weeks since the last sugar/wax
  • Trim if you must to half an inch but don’t worry if you don’t – we don’t want it too short. We can always sugar longer hair, but we can’t get it if it’s too short
  • Cleanse the area to be sugared. Don’t use any oils, lotions or moisturizers

What should I avoid the 24 hours before my appointment?

  • Don’t exfoliate the area
  • Avoid tanning (spray or UV)
  • Don’t use any oils, lotions, or moisturizers

What should I avoid for 24 hours after my appointment?

  • Don’t exfoliate, or tan (spray or UV)
  • Avoid pools and hot tubs
  • Avoid workouts or any activity that could lead to sweating and friction
  • Sugaring your face: Avoid touching your face, wearing makeup or excessive sweating as this can cause breakouts

When should I come back?

We recommend returning for a bikini area service within 4-6 weeks, face and underarms 2-3 weeks. We use this guide because hair grows in cycles and we want to remove the hair before the next cycle starts. As everyone’s hair grows differently,  we are here to take care of you whenever the growth starts to bother you.

I’m going on a trip/have an event. How far ahead should I come in?

Before a wedding or trip – plan to have 2-3 treatments done prior to the actual event (start planning 3-5 months ahead if possible for best results) You don’t want to sit on a hot airplane or in car sweating within 24 hours of your treatment.

Face – if you’ve never had your face sugared before, we recommend coming in at least a month before your event, to see how your skin will react. If you don’t have any breakouts or dryness, then you’ll want to come 2-3 days before the event.

Everyone’s skin reacts differently with the introduction of a new treatment. Having no reaction is normal. Having some redness, dryness or a breakout is also very normal. To this end, we strongly recommend a patch test or to have the service done well before an event.

Other body parts – 1-2 days before event – We recommend coming as close to your trip as possible to maximize the longevity of the service

I broke out on my lip/face/back/bikini area. What should I do?

Our hair follicles on the face and back have sebaceous glands, which lie just below the surface of the skin. Sebum makes its way up (from the follicle after the hair has been removed) to the surface of the skin to protect the follicle from anything getting in, and to keep too much moisture from getting out. Sometimes too much sebum can come to the surface (no hair to absorb it since removing it by the root) and then the sebum and dead skin cells can actually clog pores, causing bacteria to grow and cause acne (either whiteheads or red bumps).

To avoid sebum and dead skin buildup, you can start exfoliating a couple of days after your sugaring treatment. We recommend using an exfoliating pad specifically designed for the face, as products designed for the body are too harsh for sensitive facial skin. We recommend that you use an exfoliating glove or towel for your body, or a dry brush for your back. As your hair starts to grow back in, continue exfoliating to help the hairs come through your skin. While we don’t recommend a tanning bed, the sun’s rays tend to help dry up the sebum and the whiteheads will go away quicker.

By increasing the frequency of treatments and decreasing the amount of time between treatments, guests find their chances of a breakout lessen, as well as the amount of hair that grows in each time. This will result in less trauma to the skin each time, which in turn results in healthier skin, with fewer breakouts.

How do I prevent/treat ingrown hairs?

Some people are prone to ingrown hairs, and some body parts are prone to ingrown hairs more than others. The least expensive and simple solution to prevent ingrown hairs is to exfoliate the skin with an exfoliating glove 1-2 times per week. Exfoliating gloves are best used wet, with a body wash or soap, and need to be hung up to dry between uses to prevent moisture buildup causing mold. Don’t forget to purchase a new glove on a regular basis as a glove used longer than 8 weeks will not be as abrasive, resulting in it being less effective.

After a workout or excessive sweating, wash and dry the ingrown-prone area and change into fresh, clean clothing as quickly as possible.

Your Sugaring Specialist will provide you with additional ingrown hair solutions based on their assessment of your skin and hair.

I just got sugared. Why is my hair growing already?

Each hair that grows out of each follicle is on its own schedule. It grows, it rests, and then it dies. Depending on what cycle and stage of growth that particular hair is in when you receive a sugaring treatment, will determine how long a new hair takes to grow in. Only hair that has come to the surface of the skin, and is long enough since your last epilation or depilatory treatment, will be removed.

Sometimes it will appear that your hair is growing quickly, when in fact, that brand new hair was waiting just below the surface layer of the skin to pop up within a few days. Other times it takes weeks for that brand new hair to reach the surface layer of the skin, resulting in lasting, hairless results.

How long does sugaring last?

Sugaring results vary from person to person. We recommend that a female guest return within 4-6 weeks for legs or bikini areas, 2-3 weeks for underarms/eyebrows/lip/chin.

Men’s back appointments are spaced out starting approximately 5 weeks apart.

The amount of hair and how quickly the hair grows and dies (the hair growth cycle), depends on many factors including hormones, prescription drugs, age, heredity, illness (chemo), and stress.

Can I get sugared when I have my period?

Absolutely! If you are coming in for a below the belt sugaring service, we ask that a tampon or diva cup be worn for the duration of your appointment.

Can I get sugared if I’m pregnant?

Yes! Some guests find that throughout pregnancy they are more sensitive during their treatment. Some guests have also reported less body hair growth during pregnancy while head hair and fingernails grow quicker. All of our sugaring products are safe for pregnant women and nursing mothers.

One of our aftercare products contains salicylic acid as the active ingredient, so make us aware of your pregnancy and we will refrain from using that product.

Why am I more sensitive this month?

Our hormones fluctuate all the time and have a major effect on how we perceive discomfort. Some guests tend to be more sensitive before their cycle, some are more sensitive during or after their cycle. Pregnancy, stress, prescription medication and dehydrated skin may also manifest in different ways making your skin more sensitive. Our sugaring technique is renowned for accommodating sensitivities and talking with your Sugaring Specialist is the best way to ensure a comfortable experience.

Why is my skin flaking after my sugaring treatment and what can I do about it?

Dry skin can be a result of sugaring repeatedly over an area of stubborn hair, or due to simply having sensitive skin. Guests find that by repeated sugaring treatments, there are less instances of flaking afterwards. By gently exfoliating and using a water-based moisturizer, flaking skin is a non-issue.

Is sugaring good for brows?

Brows are one of our specialties! Unlike the other parts of the body, our success is measured in the hair we leave behind, not the hair we remove. We trim, sugar and tweeze brows to create your prefect shape.

Will my hair grow back thicker/darker/more dense when I sugar?

When we sugar any body part, we remove hair by the root, which results in thinner, weaker, and finer hair growth. With fluctuating hormones, as women get older, we tend to grow more hair on our faces. This is not as a result of sugaring.

Can I sugar from head to toe?

On a woman’s body, we can sugar from just below the hairline on the forehead to the toes and everything in between! Men’s body hair can also be safely removed using sugar for the majority of the body. The only body parts we do not sugar are the top of the head and men’s facial hair, as they are both very painful areas to remove hair from. In addition, men’s facial hair, may grow in a complex intertwined network under the skin which if sugared, could result in very painful ingrown hairs.

Why does Lux recommend having three weeks hair growth when other places say they can do it after only 4 to 10 days post shave?

At Lux we recommend waiting 3 weeks post last shave for the legs and bikini area, and 2 weeks post last shave for the underarms and face, for the longest lasting results and the least amount of discomfort.

We can absolutely remove some hair after only a few days post last shave, like others claim, however it is more important for us to educate our guests about the cycle of growth to achieve optimal results and cause the least amount of discomfort. We want to do the best job possible for you and your hard-earned money!

Why can’t I get sugared while on Accutane?

Isotretinoin (also known as Accutane) is a naturally occurring derivative of Vitamin A and is an oral medication that is prescribed by dermatologists for severe acne caused by overactive sebaceous glands. We cannot sugar anyone who is currently taking Isotretinoin. You must also have stopped taking it for at least 6 months prior to us being able to do a sugaring treatment.

The sebaceous glands in your body contain oils to keep your skin naturally hydrated and keep bacteria out. Isotretinoin works to reduce acne by essentially drying up the sebaceous glands in the entire body and depleting it of moisture. This medication also thins out the top layer of skin, leaving you more prone to skin tears, and bruising. Sugar paste only sticks to dry, dead skin. There is a greater risk of causing extensive damage to the skin, as the act of removing the sugar could cause the skin to tear open, leaving you vulnerable to infection and incredible pain. It is very important to inform your Specialist if you plan on taking Isotretinoin and have a plan in place while you are taking this medication, as well as to support your return to sugaring as a hair removal option after acne treatment is completed.

Makeup Application

How long does it take to get makeup professionally done?

We book a minimum of 45 minutes for our artists to ensure professional results. Whether you want to achieve a simple or complex makeup look, the number of products used are the same.

How do I prepare for my makeup appointment in studio?

To get the most out of our expertise, arrive with your face clean and moisturized. If you have a look in mind, be sure to bring pictures to show your artist, and they will work with you to achieve the level of glam you’re looking for. It’s also helpful to wear a button-up or loose neck shirt so you can change afterwards without smudging.

Do you travel? Do you charge a travel fee?

Traveling is what we love about our job. We know that on a stressful day it is much easier for someone to come to you so that you can enjoy and relax on your special day. We do not charge a travel fee if your location is within London. Depending on how far we have to travel outside of the London area, there may be an additional travel charge, but this will never be a surprise to you. Please inquire for details.

Do I need a deposit to secure my wedding date?

Deposits protect both the bride and artist. A deposit changes your wedding inquiry from request to confirmed. If a cancellation occurs, the artist is compensated for the loss of income. It is especially important during the peak of wedding season when multiple requests for the same days are being received. There are a couple of things you can do to decide if you want to book with us: have a look at our portfolio of happy wedding days and trial applications OR schedule a trial yourself to be sure a Lux artist provides the style and service you want on your wedding day. Your deposit is fully refundable up to six months in advance of your wedding.

Do I need a bridal trial?

This is completely up to personal preference. Not everyone has the time or money to book a trial ahead of time. If you cannot schedule time for a trial not to worry, we always have a few moments to chat over the phone or through email about what you are looking for. It’s helpful if we have a few photos of the look you’d like to achieve. If you can book a trial, it’s a great way to eliminate stress and save time on the busy morning of the wedding. We will pin down the exact look you are trying to achieve. Any pictures of your makeup inspiration will help us get an idea of what you have in mind for your big day. As trials can take up to two hours, ensure you dedicate time for us to be able to give you the look you’re dreaming of!

When should I book my bridal makeup trial?

  • Schedule a makeup appointment after you’ve picked out what you will be wearing. What you wear could dramatically affect the style you choose for your makeup. Please provide an image of your outfit before or during the trial.
  • Schedule the appointment 3-4 months before your wedding day. If you’re not 100% set on the makeup chosen for the trial, this will give you enough time to schedule a second trial.
  • After your trial you’ll be primped and glam, so plan something fun afterwards! For productivity, plan to have your appointment the same day as your dress fitting, engagement photos, bridal shower, bachelorette party, or just a fun date night! This will also help you see what the makeup will look like over an evening….just like on the day of your wedding.
  • Have images available of makeup looks that you’d be interested in trying.
  • Bring accessories such as veils, headpieces, necklaces and earrings. This will help you see the final look

Do I need false lashes?

False lashes are a great enhancement to your application, but are absolutely not required. They are however, included in our on-location application price for some extra glam! False lashes are never mandatory, but we think it polishes the final look, and the price per application remains the same, even if you or your ladies choose not to wear them.

What kind of makeup products do you use?

We carry a very large and well-rounded makeup kit, filled with high-end makeup products for every skin tone, skin concerns or look you wish to create. Some of the brands you would find in our kit include: M.A.C, Makeup Forever, Stila, Too Faced, Tart, Kat Von D, Urban Decay, COVER FX, Hourglass, Smash Box, Bite Beauty, Charlotte Tilbury, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Nars, Laura Mercier, and much more! We’re kind of obsessed.

How do you ensure that your kit is sanitary?

We maintain a very high standard of cleanliness at Lux. Our hands are cleansed and sanitized between clients, makeup products and brushes are disinfected and sanitized using a specialized cleanser along with an alcohol spray directly on the products before and after each application. We use disposable lash and lip wands and never reuse applicators or double-dip into product.

What methods of payment do you accept?

We accept Cash, Interac Debit, Credit Card or etransfer at Lux. On location, the day of your wedding, your artist accepts cash only.

Organic Spray Tanning

Why choose a SunnaTan organic spray tan?

SunnaTan is an all-natural, spray tanning formula that works with each unique skin tone to deliver a flawless glow. The organic tan solution is packed with skin-loving ingredients like sunflower oil, bark extract, gotu kola, echinacea, and green tea. It’s fragrance-free, paraben-free, and vegan.

What do I need to know before a spray tan?

  • Try not to apply any types of perfume, deodorant, oils or moisturizers on the day of your spray tan as these can adversely affect the results.
  • Sugaring or shaving should be completed at least 24 hours prior to your spray tan to reduce sensitivity and uneven results
  • The evening before or the morning of your spray tan, exfoliate your entire body using an exfoliating glove and/or body polish.  Pay special attention to dry areas of your body such as hands, elbows, knees and feet
  • Wear dark, loose fitting clothing with a dark coloured bra or preferably no bra at all.  Please be aware the guide colour can stain light hair, manmade fibres and wool
  • We recommend you have a patch test prior to your spray tan treatment

What to expect at my spray tan appointment?

  • The spray tan application takes about 15-20 minutes to cover the whole body
  • The bronzing mist will dry on your skin in just a few minutes so you can dress straight after the treatment
  • Avoid touching or rubbing your skin once the spray tan is completed
  • For the short period of time that your face is sprayed, close your eyes and do not inhale. If you suffer from respiratory problems, please contact your doctor before having a treatment

What do I need to know after my spray tan appointment?

  • It is fine to leave the guide colour on overnight and rinse it off in the morning
  • Do not shower or bathe for a minimum of four hours after your spray tan (preferably 8-12 hours)
  • Do not participate in any activity which may cause perspiration for at least twelve hours after the spray tan
  • Your tan will begin to develop immediately after your appointment and will complete development at 24 hours post appointment. When you shower it will look like your tan is coming off, but that is only the bronze guide colour
  • During the first 12 hours after your spray tan, the bronzer may slightly rub off on lighter clothing and sheets. If it does, being a natural sugar based solution it will wash out very easily.

What is the active ingredient in the SunnaTan solution?

DHA (dihydroxyacetone) is approved by the food and drug administration for use in sunless tanning products. DHA is derived from sugar; synthesizes with the skin’s proteins, including amino acids in the outermost layer of the skin. The organic spray tan works with your natural pigments in the epidermis (top layer) of the skin to produce a safe, natural tan.

Why didn't I get as dark this treatment as I did with my last session?

Due to the ever-changing chemistry of the body, there are times of the month that the body may be less receptive to DHA. Some people can even be DHA resistant. If a client perspires excessively during development time, this may dilute the solution and thus will not allow the DHA to absorb into the skin properly. Lastly, if the skin has residual oil or moisturizer on it, this will block the DHA and prevent the skin from reacting and changing colours. (Ask us about the pH balancing option. It will go to work to get rid of the skin’s daily body oils, perfumes and hidden dry skin, resulting in a perfect tan).

Can I get a tan the same day as sugaring?

We recommend getting sugared approximately 24 hours prior to getting a spray tan. Your follicles (which we remove hair from during a sugaring treatment), may be sensitive and so adding the tanning solution to the skin may cause some irritation.  In addition, the skin that has been exfoliated during the sugaring treatment will be smoother than the skin that has not been exfoliated in the same way. This could cause the tanning solution to go on the skin unevenly.

What products should I avoid to make my tan last longer?

Bar soaps, products with Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and mineral oil as well as petroleum-based product will all contribute to your tan fading more rapidly. Avoid long hot baths, and exposure to chlorinated water. Any skin care products with Alpha Hydroxy, Glycolic or Salicylic Acid, Retin-A and Retinol will fade your tan more quickly as well.

How long does the tan last?

Your tan can last between 5-10 days, depending on how often you maintain your skin care such as moisturizing. We have face and body lotion extenders for purchase. These extenders will help you extend your tan beyond 10 days.

What can I do to maintain my tan?

  • Apply moisturizer or body butter daily in between spray tan applications to maintain your tan and to ensure even fading
  • Exfoliate your skin with a gentle body polish every three days to ensure your tan fades evenly
  • Do not rub, but pat your skin dry after showering or bathing
  • Avoid swimming pools as chlorine can bleach the tan

How can I remove my old tan?

Mix lemon juice with a little baking soda or baby oil. Saturate the skin with the mixture, then let it sit for about five minutes before wiping it off. This will remove the tan entirely.

Lashes & Brows

What's the difference between sugaring and tweezing brows?

Both methods, when done properly, will remove hair by the root. Tweezing can take longer because removing the fine fuzz and defining the shape is done one hair at a time. Sugaring removes hair in larger sections, without increasing the discomfort. With our brow services, we always finish with tweezers to be sure every single out-of-place hair is removed.

My brows aren’t symmetrical. Can they be fixed to match one another?

No two eyebrows are the same. Have you heard the saying, “cousins, not twins”? There are many reasons brows may not be symmetrical: Muscles in the brow area can differ from one side to the other, hair normally grows differently on each brow, always sleeping on one side, scarring…just to name a few. With shaping, we try to get both brows to look as similar as possible without completely changing the shape. Experimenting with makeup is always a good idea if perfectly symmetrical brows is the look you want to achieve.

Is there a universal brow shape that looks good on everyone?

We don’t believe so. We work with you to create a customized brow shape. Your face is unique and your brow shape should flatter and accentuate your beautiful face!

What is a lash lift and tint?

A lash lift is a chemical process that is used to change the structure and texture of the lashes. Depending on the size of the rod used, the lashes can be lifted more or less dramatically. The appointment time is about 40-50 minutes depending on how long and coarse the eyelashes are and if your lashes will be tinted. The results can last anywhere between 6 to 8 weeks, but can vary from guest to guest depending on your lash growth cycle. There are some situations that may cause the lift to drop/weaken prematurely such as swimming, use of harsh products or heat. If you find that your lift does not last the full 2 months, you can repeat the treatment after a minimum of 4 weeks of having the initial treatment.

How should I prepare for my lash lift appointment?

Do not consume any caffeinated beverages before your appointment because caffeine can cause your eyes to flutter when closed. Make sure to arrive without contacts, concealer, and eye makeup (mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow etc.)

What aftercare is needed following my lash lift?

Do not wet your lashes for 24 hours after the appointment.  After 24 hours you can wash with a gentle cleanser.  Sleep on your back the first evening following your lift.  Your lashes are prone to kinks within 24 hours after the procedure.  If you’d still like to use mascara for some added fullness, wait 24 hours and use a non-waterproof mascara (waterproof mascaras can be harsh on the lashes and weaken the lift).

Teeth Whitening

How does teeth whitening work?

In as little as 15 minutes, teeth whitening gel absorbs LED light energy from our professional light, which photo-chemically “excites” the peroxide molecules into breaking down quickly. Our teeth whitening service can make teeth up to 8 shades whiter in one session! It is safe on enamel, protects gums, and causes little to no sensitivity.

Is teeth whitening safe during pregnancy?

We recommend that you contact your physician prior to booking a teeth whitening treatment while pregnant. However, no government-issued restrictions currently exist.

Can I get my teeth whitened if I have gingivitis?

If you have gingivitis or any periodontal disease you should consult with your dentist prior to booking a whitening treatment.

Should I have a cleaning prior to whitening?

If possible, yes! And if you had not had a cleaning in the last 6 months, we highly recommend it.

Can I get my teeth whitened if I have crowns, caps or veneers?

SunnaSmile is safe for crowns, caps and veneers, and stains will be removed during whitening, returning to their original colour.

Training

How many students are in your classes?

Classes are made up of a maximum of four students per instructor. This allows each student the attention needed from the educator for learning best practices in hygiene, theory and hands-on technique. Individual students wishing to take the course will be paired up with another individual student available in the same time frame. We cannot accommodate models who are not taking the class.

How long is the Body Sugaring Certification class?

The Body Sugaring Certification class is a comprehensive 9 hour in-class training program which consists of a theory component and a hands-on approach to learning.

What is included?

This career-driven certification class includes an unforgettable 1-day experience among a small group students with a collective vision for success.

Do I have to sign a contract to use your products?

We do not require students or Professional Sugaring Specialists to sign a contract to use only our products and we won’t depreciate the cost of our class with the condition that our products be bought and used.

Will this certificate allow me to open an account at a beauty supply store?

All beauty supply stores have different requirements that need to be met, and it is the responsibility of the applicant to each store, to ascertain what those requirements are. The certificate obtained after successful completion of the Body Sugaring Certification class entitles you to purchase sugaring supplies and bulk retail products at wholesale prices from Lux Premier Beauty for use and sale in your salon.

Do I need to be a certified aesthetician to take your courses?

We do not have a requirement of aesthetic certification to qualify to complete the Body Sugaring Certification class. Depending on the laws of your province or state, completing a certified esthetics program may be necessary to operate a business which specializes in body sugaring. The responsibility falls to the operator of each individual business to identify the requirements in their own province or state.
